Here's an update on our case:
We have been tasked with the care of an elderly family member down in Florida. We had a court appearance scheduled Monday, 10/29 to answer as to counsel, since our attorneys quit on 10/18. (I forgot to tell you all about that, I've been kinda busy)
Since we really needed the funds, and this sick man really needed help, we left our Bishop, the Right Reverend Gregory Karl Davis, to attend in our stead, and answer the court with documents we signed, notarized, and left with him. He was also to argue our motion to continue, because our attorneys quit 11 days before our trial date.
We simply weren't ready for trial. We still had an outstanding motion that hadn't been scheduled for hearing.
Anyway, the asst DA pitched a fit and said he was going to revoke our bonds, blah blah blah, you know the drill. So we were ordered to return to court within 48 hours, with the knowledge that they may still revoke our bond and jail us until trial. I'm not afraid of jail, but I choose not to go there if I can help it.
So we showed up today in court after driving all night. There was a very interesting jury trial going on that we were privy to, but I digress. Brother Greg was concerned that he had screwed us up royally and that there were officers just standing around waiting for us to arrive so they could arrest us and take us straight to jail. I can't explain what I was feeling today. Too weird. But whatever it was, I overcame it and was strong in front of the judge.
Here are the results of the showdown between the forces of good and evil in Baldwin County Alabama on All Hallow's Eve 2007:
The judge acknowledged on the record that we are Reverends and ordained ministers. He asked about our church, etc.
It is on the record that I have lost the ability to work in my chosen profession due to the investigation of my nursing license, directly in relation to the charges against me.
Our case is continued until January 10, 2008, when the judge will hear EVERY outstanding motion before the court. I filed RFRA back in April, and the Treaty motion today.
Oh, I almost forgot....when Brother Greg was in court on Monday, it was stated by this judge that "this is all just a Monopoly game" (Helllooo!) and on the record! So, after all the tension around here this past week, I'll take this as a few more small victories in our fight to stand strong. Thank You God for the strength to keep standing firm!
Hope that made sense, I'm still kinda tuckered out.
More as things develop, Brenda
